Facilities at the University of Miami

Center for Aerosol Science and Technology at the University of Miami

The Center for Aerosol Science and Technology (CAST) is a newly established research center at the University of Miami consisting of a group of faculty, students, and researchers focused on the characterization of fundamental aerosol formation and transformation processes to determine the impact on the Environment, Climate, Health, and to utilize these processes to develop new materials to enable Energy, Environment, and Medical technologies. CAST currently has eight core and multiple affiliated faculty members from the College of Engineering, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, and Miller School of Medicine. CAST faculty members have monthly meetings to discuss research collaboration and event preparation. CAST also hosts an annual workshop on Aerosol Science and Technology in January. The purpose of this two-day workshop is to showcase aerosol research in South Florida and promote academic and industrial collaborative opportunities. CAST facilities can be found here

The Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science

FICMS houses a purpose-built transmission electron microscopy suite that includes a multi-purpose ThermoFisher F200C TEM for high contrast imaging of beam sensitive materials, as well as an aberration corrected ThermoFisher Spectra 300 for ultrahigh resolution analysis. The suite has been designed to  minimize acoustic and electro-magnetic interference as well as thermal fluctuations, and includes control rooms for remote user control of instruments. All TEMs are under full service contracts. FICMS will have one Talos F200C G2 is a 200 kV FEG Transmission Electron Microscope which is well suited for multidiscipline nanoparticle research due to high automation of specified acquisition processes through the Talos user interface. The TEM resolution is 0.3 nm. FICMS also has a fully-loaded aberration-corrected Spectra 300 is a state-of-the-art FEG Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (S/TEM) with a high-tension voltage range of 30-300 kV. It is completely enclosed in a casing, specially designed to dampen acoustic and temperature variations from the environment. This enclosure not only makes it possible to transfer information well below 1 Ǻ (STEM resolution down to <63 pm), it also allows the system to easily reach ultra-high resolution routinely in a noisier environment.
